Zoo death a stark warning

The gruesome death of a zookeeper mauled by lions should not be dismissed as a rare fatal accident. What happened on Wednesday morning at Safari World — a well-known commercial zoo in Bangkok — serves as a stark warning at a time when lions are becoming increasingly popular pets in Thailand.

A glaring example was the news last year of a wealthy foreigner driving along a crowded street in Pattaya with a lion cub in the back of his Bentley convertible. Some cafe owners in Bangkok now use lion cubs as attractions to lure customers keen to take photos with the animals. Likewise, animal lovers flaunt their lion cubs on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.
The pressing question is whether these owners are adequately equipped to care for such powerful creatures. No matter how adorable and cuddly they may seem, lions are predators by nature.
