The Department of Corrections has confirmed that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is legally eligible to submit a second petition for a royal pardon, as his initial request in 2023 was never formally rejected.

- CHAIRITH YONPIAM

Pol Lt Col Prawut Wongsinil, director-general of the department, said yesterday that Thaksin can file a new petition in accordance with the law. If a petition is rejected, the inmate must wait two years before reapplying, he explained.

“In Thaksin's case, the first petition was not rejected, so he is eligible to file asecond request without waiting for the two-year period,” Pol Lt Col Prawut said.
