True outage spooks the telecom sector
The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and consumer representatives are calling for regulatory reform and increased competition in the telecom sector after a nationwide outage of True Corporation's mobile and internet services on Thursday left millions of users disconnected.
Customers began reporting service disruptions early Thursday morning, with outage reports spiking around 10am, according to Downdetector. The cause of the disruption remains unknown. True Corporation later issued a public apology and pledged compensation for affected users.
TDRI President Somkiat Tangkitvanich criticised the incident as indicative of deeper structural issues within Thailand's telecommunications sector.
