IB faces new scrutiny

The Police Immigration Bureau (IB) is fuming over a Reuters documentary-style interactive graphic report based on interviews with nine people who had allegedly been trafficked to scam centres in Myanmar between 2022 and 2025.

The report, published on Sept 18, accuses IB staff at Suvarnabhumi airport of handing foreign nationals over to groups involved in call centre gangs operating in Myawaddy in Myanmar.
Pol Maj Gen Cherngron Rimpadee, commander of Immigration Division 2, has stated that the report's information is inaccurate and fictional.
Following the publication of the report, the Royal Thai Police (RTP) conducted reviews of foreign entries in November 2024 and did not find the Ethiopian man who matched “Oly”, who had allegedly been kidnapped and was the main subject of the Reuters report.
But such a review is not enough. The best way for the government and the RTP to address negative press is to counter it with a substantive counter-probe.
