Adoption to grow 30% in 2026, study reveals

A total of 116 million electric vehicles (EVs) — cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks — are forecast to be on the world’s roads in 2026, according to the business and technology insights company Gartner Inc.
“Despite the US government introducing tariffs on vehicle imports and many governments removing subsidies and incentives for purchasing EVs, the number of EVs on the road is forecast to increase 30% in 2026,’ said Jonathan Davenport, senior director analyst at Gartner.
China is projected to account for 61% of the global EV total. Ownership of plugin hybrid EVs (PHEVs) worldwide is expected to rise 32% year-on-year as customers value the reassurance of a backup petrol engine, should they need it.
