EC faces its toughest test

The next national election will be the toughest test yet for the Election Commission (EC).

Beyond the logistical demands of holding public referendums alongside a general election, the real challenge lies in whether the EC can get round to scrutinising political parties that rely on sweeping populist promises — cash handouts, guaranteed income schemes and expansive welfare pledges to win votes.

Section 73(5) of the Organic Act on Political Parties prohibits candidates from misleading voters through deception, coercion, threats or slander. It also empowers the EC to investigate irresponsible campaign promises and, if necessary, dissolve offending parties. Yet the EC has rarely exercised this authority.
