Tensions high amid conflict in Mideast
Bangkok police have stepped up security ahead of International Quds Day today, monitoring potential protests and sensitive sites amid concerns that tensions linked to conflict in the Middle East could spark unrest.
Pol Lt Gen Sayam Boonsom, chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, told the Bangkok Post that authorities held coordination meetings earlier this week with the Special Branch Police and military intelligence units to assess the situation and prepare security measures.
He said that at around 2pm on March 13 each year, about 300 pro-Palestinian participants typically gather outside the Embassy of Israel in Bangkok, which falls under the jurisdiction of Lumpini Police Station, to hold activities marking International Quds Day and calling for peace for Palestinians.
