Chiang Mai tourism weathers the storm

Typhoon Ragasa has yet to significantly affect tourism in Chiang Mai because it is still low season, with flash floods occurring only in certain areas for a short period, and operators in the area more concerned about the strong baht steering short-haul tourists towards Vietnam.
Earlier this week, the storm caused heavy rain in several regions of Thailand, including the North and Chiang Mai province.
Punlop Saejew, vice-president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, said flooding this year was not as severe as last year’s low-season northern floods and should only have a short-term impact.
On Monday, he said flash floods and heavy rain disrupted traffic in the inner city for only a few hours.
Although locals in Mae Chaem district in the outer city were ordered to evacuate from the flood, this area is not a tourism location, as it mainly consists of villages and agricultural farms.
