Changsha: China's rising hub of innovation

Strategic Hunan city emerges as Thailand's new gateway, writes Jutamas Tadthiemrom
(YANG HUAFFNG)
For over half a decade, China has witnessed dramatic changes in its progressive development and way of life, particularly in smaller cities beyond Shanghai and Beijing.
By moving away from traditional practices, Changsha - one of the most dynamic cities in Hunan province - has stepped into a new era, strengthened by advanced technologies and its strategic midland location. The city has emerged as a potential new hub for Thailand to extend its economic growth beyond Yunnan.
Connected to the Yangtze River, Changsha benefits from key national transportation networks, including maritime links, inland transit routes, an ultramodern international airport, and high-speed railways extending to Thailand and other parts of the world.
Thailand expects its 609-kilometre high-speed rail segment, which will link the country with China via Laos, to begin operations in 2030. Currently, over one-third of the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima section - approximately 220km from the capital - has been completed, with the full line extending to Nong Khai on the Lao border scheduled to be ready by 2030.
Since the post-pandemic period, Changsha has continued to champion economic growth, projecting a regional GDP increase of 5%, surpassing 1.5 trillion yuan (6.8 trillion baht) in 2024. Its urban and rural per capita disposable incomes remain among the highest of all provincial capitals. Changsha now ranks fifth nationwide among advanced manufacturing cities and has become a pilot model for smart city development in China.
