Bid to cut Bolsonaro jail term

Brazil's Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would significantly reduce the prison term of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of plotting a coup after losing reelection to left-wing rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Approved by the lower chamber last week, the bill now goes to President Lula, who has vowed to veto it —a decision that could ultimately be overturned by Congress.

Bolsonaro, 70, began serving a 27-year prison sentence in November and, under existing rules, was expected to remain behind bars for at least eight years before becoming eligible for a less restrictive regime.

However, the new legislation, which changes how sentences are calculated for certain crimes, could see him serve just over two years in prison.
