Bangkok Bank (BBL) has implemented stricter requirements for foreign customers to open new deposit accounts, aligning with Thailand’s efforts to enhance national cybersecurity.

The bank said these tighter conditions apply to opening new accounts and applications for ATM cards and debit cards. The goal is to prevent financial fraud, particularly the use of mule accounts.

According to BBL, the bank is working with regulators to identify and prevent mule accounts and other financial scams. As a result, security measures for certain financial services, especially banking transactions, have been strengthened to protect consumers.

The adjustment could affect certain foreigners, and clients experiencing difficulties with financial transactions are encouraged to contact the bank through any of its available channels.

"If a customer is classified as suspicious under regulatory requirements, identity verification with the bank is mandatory," said BBL, Thailand’s largest bank by total assets.
