Bhumjaithai leader wins with 311 votes — a clear majority
Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul is preparing to form a government after being elected with 311 votes, comfortably surpassing the 247 required for a majority, to become the country's 32nd prime minister.
His rival, Pheu Thai Party candidate Chaikasem Nitisiri, gained 152 votes, while 27 MPs abstained.
Mr Anutin pledged to devote himself fully to the role, saying time was limited and every working day must be used to the fullest. "There will be no holidays," he added. He also thanked the People's Party (PP) and all his supporters.
Regarding cabinet lineup negotiations with coalition partners, Mr Anutin urged patience but confirmed that preparations have already been made.
He added that he would first visit his ailing father to pay respects before returning to parliament for further vote and quorum duties.
