Moves to address 'toxic culture' allegations at the hospice

- PAUL BEHAN

The Ayrshire Hospice has appointed a new Whistleblowing Champion in the wake of accusations there's a “toxic culture” within the organisation.

John Gribben initially joined the Ayrshire Hospice Board of Trustees in 2015 and brings a mix of experience at a senior level in Human Resource Management from both the public and private sector.

The Post can further reveal how “additional measures” will be in place to support all staff within the organisation - and provide them with an outlet to share any concerns.

Fresh changes are also set to include the development of an Ayrshire Hospice Staff Council, which will be launched later this year, along with a staff survey to gauge the mood.

The changes follow our exclusive story last month which revealed how the hospice was at the centre of a damaging whistleblowing email, accusing some senior figures of “bullying,” “intimidation” and “inappropriate behaviour.”

In the e-mail the whistleblower raised concerns over the conduct of one senior figure and “certain members” of the leadership team.

The individual also alleged that “ongoing bullying,” “intimidation,” and “inappropriate behaviour” directed at staff, had created a “toxic and hostile work environment.”

And the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) confirmed they had received a “concern” of a “similar nature” and it would be “assessed.”

In the wake of the accusations, hospice CEO Tracy Flynn issued a video message to all staff - seen by the Postsaying: “This is a really positive time for the Ayrshire Hospice - despite any noise that may be around us at the moment.”
