Sanction for care worker

A care attendant has been sanctioned by the industry regulator after he 'lost his self-control' with a dementia patient.

Gary Wakelam caused 'distress' to the service user after refusing to take him for a walk. The patient even left his own home and refused to return after the exchange with Wakelam.

According to the industry regulator, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), Wakelam’s fitness to practise was “impaired” due to “misconduct” and they placed a warning on his registration for 12 months.

At the time of the incident Wakelam was employed by the Crossroads (South Ayrshire) Care Attendant Scheme, in Prestwick.

The incident dates back to on or around November 16, 2023, when Wakelam visited the service user, known only as 'AA' at his home.
