Fight for Freya's law after hot soup horror at toddler's nursery

Family demanding a rule change after their two-year-old is seriously injured

A family whose daughter was badly burned during an incident at a private nursery in Prestwick have vowed to launch a petition seeking a change in the law.

Terri Gunning's two year-old daughter Freya suffered second degree, deep partial thickness burns when hot soup was spilled on her.

Now Terri and her partner, Iain Coleman, want a new law introduced so that care settings cannot serve liquid foodstuffs to children over a certain temperature.

Terri said: "When my daughter was two years old and in the care of a private nursery in Prestwick, she received second degree, deep tissue burns to her thighs because scalding soup was spilled on top of her.

"I contacted the Care Inspectorate who conducted their own investigation and upheld my complaints, however we were stuck between a rock and a hard place when we discovered that there is actually no government legislation which stipulates the maximum temperature that soup should be served to children at."

Terri and Iain enlisted the help of Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown who was said to be "horrified" by the pictures of Freya's 2022 injuries.

Ms Brown previously contacted the Minister for Children, Natalie Don-Innes, to highlight the lack of legislation in this area.

There have been several emails exchanged between Ms Brown and the Minister for Children.
