JON Greening plans to take hometown club Scarborough Athletic back to the future two decades after an iconic clash with Chelsea.
The Seadogs host League Two Forest Green Rovers in the FA Cup first round on Saturday, 20 years after then-Conference club Scarborough FC took on the might of Claudio Ranieri’s big guns.
The class of 2004 claimed three Football League scalps – Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale and Southend United – en route to the big day that Greening, then with Middlesbrough as a player, attended himself.
By 2007, the club folded and reformed at Step 6 but it took a decade to return to the town where crowds have built and the team has risen to National North status. And it is that momentum that inspires Greening’s belief that this latest FA Cup run could stretch further at a “rocking” Flamingo Land Stadium.
“When we are on it, defensively and offensively, we can beat anyone,” said the former Manchester United winger.
