Mishi Mtili - Singita: The only female field guide of Singita Grumeti, empowering other women in rural Tanzania

Singita Field Guide, Mishi Mtili, is a born-and-raised Tanzanian, hailing from Mto Wa Mbu on the northern shore of Lake Manyara. Born in Arusha in Tanzania in 1983, Mishi has been working as a Field Guide for Singita Grumeti for more than 13 years. Though her career path took a number of turns before joining the Singita family, Mishi’s unique perspective and passion means that she is able to pay attention to animal behaviour that is often overlooked by her male colleagues. Her journey at Singita started as an accountant at Singita Grumeti, which brought her even closer to her calling, as Singita’s 100-year purpose to protect and preserve large areas of Africa for future generations resonated profoundly with her. Mishi spent as much of her free time as possible learning more about wildlife and their behaviour and, in time, her patience and hard work paid off when she traded her desk for a game vehicle and became a fully-fledged Singita Field Guide. Mishi trained at Singita Grumeti and is the only female field guide working in the concessions. Mishi was named Best Female Safari Guide in Tanzania at the Tour Guides Awards in 2019, considering herself a role model for other women in rural Tanzania who she believes should be empowered to follow their dreams, especially in male-dominated industries.
