The Venezuelans deported to El Salvador

ON THE NIGHT OF MARCH 15, three planes touched down in El Salvador from the U.S., carrying Venezuelans the Trump Administration had designated as gang members and deported without due process. I was there to document their arrival.

The transfer from the plane to the buses that would carry the detainees to prison was rapid. Soldiers and police lined the route to the prison. As we entered the intake yard, the head of prisons was giving orders to an assembly of guards: Show them they are not in control.

The intake began with slaps.
