Phase out, phase in

THE WEEK India

The BJP, which is known to fight every election, from local polls to the Lok Sabha, with an insatiable appetite, has taken a curious approach in these assembly elections.

Phase out, phase in

Despite the setback in Karnataka, where the marginalisation of stalwart B.S Yediyurappa was at least one reason for the party’s decisive defeat; the BJP has still taken the ‘collective leadership’ approach in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, two of the most critical battlefields ahead of 2024. In fact, the BJP tacitly seemed to acknowledge this mistake in the recent elevation of Yediyurappa’s son, B.Y. Vijayendra, a first time MLA, to the top post of party president in the state.

And, yet, it has not stepped back from the very visible undermining of Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Vasundhara Raje in MP and Rajasthan.

It is almost as if the BJP has decided to quietly phase out all remnant leaders from the Vajpayee years as the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah led BJP builds a new hierarchy.

But would it want to do so at the risk of potential electoral defeat?

Possibly, the BJP believes that neither individual is central to its loss or win.

When power runs in the family

All the aayis, taayis, mamis, kakis and mulgis in Maharashtra and their elder sisters elsewhere are celebrating that their state has got its first woman deputy CM in Sunetra Pawar. Indeed a great moment, except that she has got the post as a legacy of her deceased husband. Nothing to be ashamed of. Lady Astor became the first woman to take a seat in the House of Commons, because her husband had to give it up when elevated to the House of Lords.

Republic of trivia and whataboutery

Year after year, for decades, I went to Rajpath (nee Kingsway) for the Republic Day Parade. I came to associate January 26 with cold foggy mornings, milling crowds smelling of damp wool and patriotism, and those cruel wooden benches that imprinted slat patterns on your behind. Yet, from the moment the first helicopter rained rose petals till the last fighter jet scrammed into the heavens with an earsplitting roar, I forgot my numb derriere. And when the band struck up the national anthem, my heart swelled with unearned pride, and I stood up straight—all misty-eyed and patriotic.
