This week sees the release of not one but two new books from journalist Rebecca Macfie.

The first, HARDSHIP AND HOPE (BWB), had its genesis in Macfie's Listener's series of the same name from 2023 and three of the stories are republished alongside three new accounts. They tell of the work of people in communities in Hawke's Bay, the East Coast, Papakura and Porirua, in schools, courts and marae, who seek to create a fairer future. Rather than offering complete, transferable solutions to poverty, says Macfie, the book seeks to understand its history and infrastructure.
