In the pre-dawn hour, the timeless charm of Varanasi unfolds gently. The ancient city is already awake as I dodge traffic in the narrow lanes in my quest to reach the legendary Assi Ghat, whose origins are wrapped in the mists of time. I'm here to witness Subah-e-Banaras, a daily ritual since 2014, which sees the ghat suffused with the sounds of Vedic chanting, followed by a moving morning aarti, a classical music performance and a spot of yoga. This is a celebration not just of Varanasi's traditions, but of its very spirit.
