North Berwick's vibrant annual festival blends arts, music and coastal charm

Seaside Fringe

WITH a population of little over 8,000, North Berwick spends most of the year as a peaceful haven. Nestled by the coast and overlooking the dramatic Bass Rock, the town harbours an undeniably special atmosphere.

Each August, excitement builds as the Fringe By The Sea festival prepares to share the soul of this dreamlike town with an astonishing 85,000 people. With more than 250 events, there's something for everyone this year.

“It's one of the most beautiful festival locations in the world,” director Rory Steel says. “The founders felt that people in East Lothian shouldn't have to go all the way into Edinburgh to see some quality artistic talent.

“It's a real pleasure – it's not a job,” Rory, who has been involved since 2018, adds. “We have been delighted to grow the festival and keep its essence at the heart of what we do.”

This year, Fringe By The Sea will launch its inaugural music film festival, called Wavelength, with support from Screen Scotland.
