A Legacy of Impact
Tatler Philippines
|May 2025
Maria Banatao reflects on a life she built with her husband, Dado. In this interview with Tatler, she shares their experiences regarding family, career, obstacles and the most important lessons she has learnt
Maria and Diosdado “Dado” Banatao have long been celebrated in innovation, philanthropy and education. Dado is particularly renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the semiconductor industry, where his work has significantly advanced technology and paved the way for modern electronic devices. However, the couple's most enduring legacy may be PhilDev, the foundation they co-founded to drive sustainable development in the Philippines. Through PhilDev, they focus on fostering progress by promoting technology adoption, nurturing entrepreneurship and enhancing educational opportunities. This initiative aims to empower individuals and communities, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth and technological advancement.
Founded in 2011, PhilDev was born out of a desire to harness science and technology to fuel economic growth in the country. Dado’s experience as an engineer, investor and entrepreneur—tempered by Maria's background in psychology and counselling—helped the couple build an organisation dedicated to equipping young Filipinos with the tools they need to excel in an increasingly competitive global landscape. “We knew that for the Philippines to advance, we needed to invest in education and technology,” Maria says. “That’s what PhilDev is about—creating opportunities for Filipinos through knowledge and innovation.”
CHANCES RISE One of PhilDev's key initiatives is its scholarship programme, which supports students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Since its inception, the foundation has provided financial assistance and mentorship opportunities to promising Filipino students, many of whom have become leaders in their respective fields.
