A DISCONNECTION OF FORM
Prestige Malaysia
|July 2026
Three polarising releases that push us to better understand the new direction of automotive design.
For over a century, the architectural layout of the automobile was governed by a predictable, almost comforting mechanical reality.
The length of a bonnet was dictated by the cylinders beneath it; the taper of a rear end was shaped by the exit of exhaust gasses and the positioning of a driven axle. It was a biological design language where form followed the muscle.
Today, that connection has been entirely severed. The rise of multi-motor electric architectures and ultra-dense hybrid powertrains has granted designers total structural freedom—and paradoxically, it has plunged them into chaos. Without the physical constraints of internal combustion engines, modern car styling has devolved into a battle of competing surfaces, digital minimalism, and disjointed proportions.
Three recent blockbusters—the radical, LoveFrom-designed Ferrari Luce, the newly unveiled Audi Nuvolari supercar, and the chunky Fiat Grande Panda SUV crossover—perfectly illustrate this new era of visual disorientation. While technically brilliant, each reveals a profound truth about contemporary automotive aesthetics: when a car can look like absolutely anything, it frequently struggles to look cohesive at all.
As humans, we look for harmony and a natural sense of balance in the objects we admire. When luxury design moves too far into abstract geometry, the emotional connection breaks down. The true challenge for the future is breathing soul, fluidity, and visual poetry back into the machine, proving that a vehicle can be beautifully balanced rather than just technically advanced.
