Why Women's Tennis Now Outshines the Men's Game
Man's World
|September 2025
Women's tennis has been more compelling, more competitive than men's tennis for quite some time, and all four grand slams this year have affirmed it
On September 8, the bustling city of New York played host to two of the biggest tennis matches of the year: the men's and women's singles final of the US Open 2025, the last grand slam of the season. In the men’s final, Carlos Alcaraz not only crushed the entire idea of Jannik Sinner in but also dampened the spirits of those who were expecting something more gripping, more thrilling than they got to witness at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows. In the women's final, Aryna Sabalenka, the most consistent player, finally bagged her first grand slam title of the year, after a string of agonising misses in Melbourne, Paris, and London. Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova in straight sets to become the first woman in eleven years to successfully defend her US Open crown.
In terms of narrative, these two matches stood poles apart. The Alcaraz’s triumph over Sinner felt like an extension of the rest of the matches of the men's event at the US Open 2025: one-sided, monotonous, and devoid of any contingency. There were no breakout stories, nothing that we did not already know about men’s tennis.
