Since its inception in 2011 in Kolkata, India, the festival travelled to various cities such as Panjim, Delhi, Jaipur, and Patna, attracting music lovers, international festival organizers, and directors from every corner of the globe. Upholding its motto, “Music for Peace, Music for All,” Sur Jahan emphasized the incredible power of music to unite cultures, foster social cohesion, and promote peace.

The festival celebrated the “root” music of the world by showcasing both traditional and contemporary musical expressions from diverse cultures. Through its steadfast mission to promote cultural diversity, Sur Jahan became an iconic platform where audiences experienced the global music traditions firsthand. Over the years, musicians from 32 countries graced the stage, highlighting the vast spectrum of the global music landscape and reminding everyone of our shared humanity.

Sur Jahan’s journey began under the banner of Su Sutra, which ran from 2011 to 2016. These formative years laid the groundwork for what would evolve into a vibrant movement. Kolkata, with its rich musical heritage, hosted the inaugural edition in 2011, quickly capturing the imagination of music enthusiasts. In the ensuing years, the festival expanded its reach to other cities, earning a reputation for commitment to cultural exchange and international collaboration.
