MANDO FESTIVAL Preserving Traditions in a Rapidly Changing Goa
Incredible Goa
|December 2024
"The loss of culture is the loss of identity."

This phrase has gained considerable attention in recent years, urging individuals to reconnect with their roots in an effort to rediscover themselves. In today's era of globalization, where individuals can effortlessly immerse themselves in a myriad of cultures, many have become more attuned to the traditions of others. However, this shift has often led to the neglect of one's own cultural heritage, as the world becomes an ever-blending melting pot of diverse influences. One such cultural tradition that epitomizes the rich and unique blend of Goa's history is the 'mando.' This musical genre, sung in Konkani, represents an unparalleled fusion of Portuguese and Indian influences, making it a distinctive part of Goan identity. Despite its centuries-old existence, mando continues to reflect themes of love, longing, and heartbreak, woven into its narrative lyrics.
Traditionally performed at weddings and community gatherings, mando is now more often heard at select events. The Goa Cultural and Social Centre (GCSC), the key organizers of the mando festival, have made commendable efforts to preserve and promote this important facet of Goan culture. In a bid to keep such age-old traditions alive, the government of Goa has been organizing the All Goa StateLevel Mando Festival each December.
This year marked the 57th edition of the festival, held at the Menezes Braganza Hall in Panaji. However, the event's outcome was far from the grand spectacle it had once been. On the festival's first day, December 11, 2024, only three groups participated across various categories, which included one group from the children's category and two others representing teenagers, traditional mando, original compositions, and dance. These three groups performed a mere eight mande (songs).
