How the FIDE World Cup 2025 in Goa Is Rewriting India's Sports Story

When the International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed that the FIDE World Cup 2025 would be held in Goa, it wasn't just a win for chess it was a turning point for India's sports tourism narrative. For the first time in 23 years, the country is hosting this flagship knockout tournament, and Goa now finds itself at the centre of global chess attention.

According to FIDE's official regulations, the World Cup is being held in Goa from 30 October to 27 November 2025, bringing together 206 players from around 80 countries, all competing for a USD 2 million prize fund and three coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the gateway to the next World Championship match.

A Historic Return - and a New Image for Goa

The tournament's opening in Taleigao's Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium marked the World Cup's return to India after more than two decades, with top names like D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Wesley So and Anish Giri in the field.
