Chapter 4: Offbeat Places to Discover in Himachal Pradesh

- By Aditi Malhotra

EXPLORING NORTH INDIA

Himachal Pradesh, often referred to as the “Land of the Gods,” is synonymous with its popular hill stations like Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala. But beyond these tourist-packed towns lies a world of lesser-known, offbeat destinations that offer a blend of untouched natural beauty, serene vibes, and authentic cultural experiences. In this chapter of our journey through North India, we venture into Himachal’s hidden gems–places that redefine tranquility and adventure for the discerning traveller.

1. Chitkul - The Last Village of India

Nestled in the Kinnaur district, Chitkul is a tiny hamlet that lies on the Indo-Tibetan border. At an altitude of over 11,000 feet, it is the last inhabited village on the old Hindustan-Tibet trade route. Chitkul is a paradise for those seeking solitude amidst breathtaking landscapes. The Baspa River flows through the valley, surrounded by verdant meadows and towering snow-capped peaks. The village is also home to quaint wooden houses, a temple dedicated to the local goddess Mathi, and fields of buckwheat that paint the valley in hues of gold during harvest.

2. Jibhi - A Quaint Hamlet in the Tirthan Valley

Often referred to as Himachal's best-kept secret, Jibhi is a picturesque village in the Tirthan Valley. Far from the hustle and bustle of tourist hubs, Jibhi offers a tranquil escape with its dense pine forests, traditional Himachali homes, and the soothing sound of the Tirthan River. A short trek from Jibhi takes you to the stunning Jibhi Waterfall, hidden amidst lush greenery. The nearby Chehni Kothi, a 17th-century tower built entirely of stone and wood, is a fascinating slice of history worth exploring.

3. Kalpa - The Land of Majestic Kinnaur Kailash
