Versatile enough to be a bandana, neckerchief or a chic addition to a sharply tailored suit, the humble silk scarf is seeing a resurgence.

Modern Revival

SYMBOL OF ROCK

The silk scarf has swaggered gingerly through fashion history, walking the halls of aristocratic elegance to rockstar rebellion, and now, to a modern red carpet resurgence. Once the choice of 19th-century dandies and Hollywood legends, it found its true legs as the “It” accessory in the ’60s and ’70s, thanks to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and David Bowie.

imageWhile Hendrix tied his paisley scarves around his head, Jagger slung them over unbuttoned shirts, and Bowie blurred the lines between masculinity and high fashion with his bold, fluid styling. In the ’80s, Axl Rose rocked them as bandana hybrids, while Steven Tyler turned them into stage props, draping a scarf over his mic stand for that dramatic flair.
