Home technology's never been more accessible, and these ideas will make a big difference

Even if you're apprehensive about technology, you almost certainly often use it without even realising - such as scrolling through Instagram on your phone, asking Alexa a question or planning a route on the satnav. Integrating tech into your home is the logical next step, as it saves time, money, energy and effort while boosting comfort and security - and, thanks to wireless connectivity, you won't have to redecorate. From smart plugs to solar panels, technology will future-proof your home and you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

Install a smart hub

A central hub is a must-have if you own more than a couple of smart devices, gadgets or systems. Rather than managing them separately, a smart hub connects them together, enabling you to programme and control them through a single app, a screen or panel, or voice commands.

Before installation, check that your broadband is fast and reliable or upgrade, if necessary. Full fibre is the speediest but not available everywhere. You'll need to pick a platform - also known as an ecosystem - for your hub. Major players include Amazon's Alexa, Google Home and Apple, but some devices and brands only work with certain systems - for example Hive heating with Alexa or a Nest video doorbell with Google - so check compatibility first.

Upgrade your heating

Smart heating systems provide more precision than a conventional one, by incorporating smart thermostats that link to the boiler and the internet. You can control these from your phone or tablet from almost anywhere, ensuring you only heat the areas that are used. explains Nick Duggan, managing director at The Radiator Centre. You can install smart valves to heat individual rooms or different zones of the house, such as upstairs and downstairs.
