The German Shepherd Mixes Who Offer a Reset
As a palliative care clinical therapist just outside Washington, D.C., Kris Van Houten supports patients who are facing the end of their lives. “Each day is different,” she says. “But mostly I create a safe space for people and their families to process their feelings. I listen to their life stories and help them cope.” Often she sits with families as they keep vigil for their dying loved ones. “I join in their laughter, share memories, and learn what brings them joy,” she says. It’s rewarding but heartrending work, so at the end of the day, she seeks out the comfort of Max and Luna, her two German shepherd mixes, ages 4 and 7. “Coming home to them means unconditional love and lots of kisses,” she says. It also eases her into a state of mindfulness. “As I’m petting the dogs after work, watching how they show excitement and gratitude effortlessly, my thoughts begin to focus, my breathing slows, and I focus my attention on their reactions. Is this the right spot? Should I scratch over here?” Spending time with them each night resets Kris for the following day, helping her feel renewed and ready to be there for her patients.
