Suwan Kongkhunthian of Yothaka, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at Abaca, a luxury furniture showroom in Mumbai, has a softly measured way of speaking. Despite the excitement in his voice (which shines as he tells us of his recent experimentation with colour), he exercises restraint when talking about his work. He is exuberant but disciplined in his approach - which might just be the best way to describe his designs too. You may have seen a Yothaka chair at a luxury resort or museum around the world. It has a certain rhythm of form, balance of proportion, and beauty that comes from an inherent understanding of aesthetics, thoughtfully honed by the eye over decades.
