HOW MUCH DOES A GARAGE COST?

Whether you're planning to build a new one, renovate your existing one or convert a garage into an extra room, here's what you'll need to budget for the work

HOW MUCH DOES A GARAGE COST?

Whether you wish to build a brand-new garage or renovate an old one, it's important to know what the average prices are so you can budget accordingly. A garage can be so much more than a place to park your vehicle, from workshop space to future conversion options, but the price can vary a lot depending on design, materials, and whether the garage will be attached or detached.

As a rough estimate, budget between £12,000 to £30,000 for a single detached new garage, up to £35,000 to £60,000 or more for a larger double or integrated scheme with higher-end finishes. It is cheaper to convert an existing garage, with typical costs between £3,500 to £15,000, depending on the nature of the work, from re-roofing and structural repairs to conversion to habitable space.

FACTORS THAT WILL IMPACT YOUR COSTS

Whether building a new garage or converting an existing one, the cost will vary significantly based on a number of important factors:

Renovation vs. new-build

Because it requires foundations, preparation and construction from the ground up, building a new garage will typically cost more than renovating an existing one. The current state of the existing garage affects renovation costs - minor cosmetic changes are usually inexpensive, but structural repairs or conversion work can quickly drive up the budget.

Dimensions and arrangement

A single garage is obviously less expensive than a double, but other factors include width, depth and ceiling height. The total cost will increase if there is more room for storage, a workshop, a utility area or even a gym.

Attached or detached

In terms of construction and services, an attached garage could be less expensive, especially if it is adjacent to the house. Detached garages are more costly though, because they typically require separate utility connections, roofing and foundations.
