Music, architecture and the housing crisis

- WORDS PETE COLQUHOUN PHOTOGRAPHY BARTON TAYLOR

Music to your ears

How are we going to solve the housing shortage? What are the latest design trends? Can I afford to get into the real estate market? These are the questions that are dominating discussion at the moment.

They are complex issues requiring a range of solutions including rethinking the homes we currently live in and embracing intergenerational living and the simple things.

Recently I visited a little cottage conversion that addresses some of these topics. The Music Room by architect Alexander Symes is a model demonstrating modesty and simplicity and tackles some pressing issues.

The home, located in Glebe, Sydney, accommodates a family of three, including a music composer/creative producer. Like any great piece of residential design, it relies on a clear brief from a client ready to embrace sustainable concepts from their architect. A return to extended multi-intergenerational living is planned for and key to the success of the project.
