Don't let cracks, chips or stains trip you up. Revive worn and weathered concrete with these quick tips.
Q: What do I need to break up a section of sidewalk that can't be salvaged?
To prevent cracks from spreading to the good sections of sidewalk when you break up the bad slab, first use a circular saw equipped with a masonry blade or an angle grinder to cut along the ends of the damaged section. A sledgehammer and pick can be used to break a small slab out, but know that this can take some serious effort, especially if you discover that the concrete is thicker than the standard 3 in. or if it's uneven in spots. Consider renting a jackhammer to save some time and effort. Once you clear all the old concrete away, you're ready to replace it.
Q: Is it OK to power-wash a sidewalk? This story is from the June - July 2025 edition of Family Handyman.
