Pests are the uninvited guests no one wants to host. Learn the best ways to deal with them, plus how to deter them in the first place

Home invasion

Every creature has an important role in the ecosystem - whether that's breaking down waste, pollinating plants, seed dispersal, benefiting the soil or occupying a crucial spot in the food chain.

However, this doesn't mean you want them getting comfortable in your home.

Some infestations could damage the fabric of your property, while others simply want to rest and raise their young in the warmth and safety of your loft space. Knowing the difference is key, as is preventing and treating unwanted, troublesome pests.

For the most part, wasps are a minor nuisance buzzing around during the summer months, but they are not just a fair-weather problem. 'By October, most wasps will have died but the new queens will be searching for spots - like lofts, sheds and garages - to hibernate over winter,' says Paul Blackhurst, head of technical academy at Rentokil.

Hibernating wasps will be tucked into small gaps, making them hard to spot. Instead, look for the start of a nest being built in early spring. 'Small, newly formed nests can sometimes be treated using a nest destroyer foam or powder, but large or established nests should be treated by an expert,' says Paul. Inactive wasp nests are not cause for concern; they aren't reused. It will be obvious if a wasp nest is active, as there will be lots of buzzing and wasps flying in and out of the nest/space.

'To reduce the likelihood of nesting wasps, seal up small gaps around roof eaves, vents and window frames. Clearing garden debris and keeping sheds tidy can also help to eliminate potential hibernation sites,' adds Paul.
