Why Seborrheic Keratosis Appears and How to Manage It
Health Vision
|October 2025
Seborrheic keratosis is a common skin condition that affects millions of people, especially as they age. While it is usually harmless, its appearance can sometimes be alarming.

Seborrheic keratosis is a benign (noncancerous) skin growth that often appears as a brown, black, or light tan patch. These growths are usually slightly raised, have a waxy or “stuck-on” appearance, and can vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters.
They most commonly appear on the face, chest, back, or shoulders, but can develop anywhere except the palms and soles.
Why Does Seborrheic Keratosis Appear?
The exact cause of seborrheic keratosis is not fully understood, but several factors are known to contribute:
• Aging: These growths are more common in middle-aged and older adults. They tend to increase in number with age.
• Genetics: A family history of seborrheic keratosis increases the likelihood of developing these growths.
• Skin Friction: Areas of the skin that experience repeated rubbing or irritation may be more prone to these lesions.
• Sun Exposure: While seborrheic keratosis is not directly caused by sun damage like skin cancer, UV exposure may play a role in their development.
