Thrush, Blocked Ducts, and Other Nursing Challenges Explained
Breastfeeding is a natural and healthy way to feed your baby, but it isn't always easy. Many mothers face challenges while nursing, which can cause discomfort, stress, and even impact feeding. Understanding common breastfeeding difficulties can help mothers manage them effectively and continue providing the best nutrition for their babies.
1. Thrush (Yeast Infection)
What it is:
Thrush is a fungal infection caused by Candida, which can affect both the mother's nipples and the baby's mouth.
Signs for the mother:
Red, itchy, or sore nipples
Burning or shooting pain during or after nursing
Signs for the baby:
White patches in the mouth
Fussiness during feeding
Difficulty latching
How to manage:
Both mother and baby may need antifungal treatment prescribed by a doctor
Wash hands frequently and sterilize bottles, pacifiers, and breast pump parts
Avoid using harsh soaps or creams on nipples
2. Blocked Milk Ducts
What it is:
Milk ducts can become clogged when milk doesn't flow properly, leading to painful lumps in the breast.
Signs:
