Many gardeners opt to eliminate garden beds and plant everything in pots, believing it requires less maintenance. But is this true?

Planter boxes – a stylish solution for every garden

I have to break the disappointing news that nothing could be further from the truth. This is due to most pots having limited and restricted space to store water and food resources. Secondly, particularly if the pots are situated in direct sunlight, the root zones of the plants have the potential to get very hot, and most plants do not like hot roots. Thirdly, in cases of fibre cement or terracotta pots, which are porous, exposure to air draws water through the sides of the pot, thereby drying out the potting soil.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that this results in a more intensive watering and feeding regime and potential plant stress, which in turn often leads to a higher risk of pests and diseases.

So, instead of pots, let’s explore the benefits, flexibility and practicalities of incorporating planter boxes into your garden.

Why a planter box?

Planter boxes are an excellent way to introduce structure, greenery, and visual appeal to any outdoor space. By nature, they are generally larger than most pots, often open to the ground below, and tend to be more insulated against the outside elements due to their construction method.

imageThe height of the planter boxes also brings the beds a little closer to you, making your gardening life easier and more comfortable.

Whether you're looking for a decorative feature, a practical retaining wall, a screen or a barrier or a thriving food garden, there's a planter box to suit your needs. From classic brick designs to rustic wooden creations and industrial-style corrugated iron tanks, the options are endless.

The right planter can even add long-term value to your home. Let's take a look at some of the best options available.
