Your wildlife month

January can be a very difficult month, as days are still short and temperatures can plummet. Natural sources of food are in short supply, making life challenging for birds. Keep feeders clean and topped up with calorie-rich foods such as sunflower hearts.

If conditions are mild, hedgehogs may rouse from hibernation and will expend vital energy looking for food, which they probably won't find. Leave a small dish of kitten biscuits out for them so they can replenish their reserves if they need to. A hedgehog feeding station, which you can make using an old plastic or wooden box, should stop any larger mammals reaching the food.
