Having taken on a largely neglected, sizeable front garden during the pandemic, Susan Downing used her eye for colour, design and harmony to create a relaxing, sociable space for family, neighbours and passersby
-
Focusing on designing a front garden was particularly poignant for Susan Downing, having moved into the property during December 2020, on the cusp of another national lockdown. She wanted it to be sheltered enough to afford some privacy for her family, but also a space where neighbours and passersby could potentially meet on the periphery or within the winding paths and planting.
Being an old, thatched property located within a conservation area in the village of Radway, Warwickshire, it was vital that the style of the garden was in keeping with the house. Susan didn't want a completely traditional cottage garden, however, so taking inspiration from designers such as Piet Oudolf and the Rich Brothers she decided on a simple, naturalistic planting style using details such as bold paintwork on the house, a corten steel pond and sculpture, a series of small trees and winding paths, perennial planting, and carefully positioned containers and pots to add an overall air of modernity.
The result is a colourful tapestry of plants, flowers, and stylish design for all to enjoy.
How big is your garden? The planted garden is approximately 20m by 14m, and there's a 6m by 8m section of it where we park the cars.
How long have you lived here?
