|July - August 2025
Airports in India are more of an architectural marvel with all the beautification and greenery being installed as per the international standard. The feature written by Mr. Naresh Sharma, CEO of IRHPL Group of companies highlights the various experiences that culturally bind the passengers with the aesthetics approach and human connect.

Airports mark the beginning and end of a journey. However, in India, they are increasingly becoming more than just transport nodes, evolving into curated spaces that offer travellers from across the world a tactile experience and visual introduction to the country's cultural essence. With their bustling concourses and terminals, Indian airports are significantly contributing to the rising economy.
This transformation is neither accidental nor superficial. According to 2015 stats, IGI Airport, the busiest airport in the country, recorded almost 62% of its total non-aeronautical revenue of the airport from retail stores with a 33% (CAGR). Subsequently, it reflects a growing recognition that travelling via airports is more than just a moment.
These airports are reshaping into immersive gateways to India's legacy of craftsmanship, providing the travellers an opportunity to engage with traditional art and carry home something authentic and enduring.
CRAFTING NEW AIRPORT EXPERIENCES
Indian airports are making a conscious shift towards integrating local artisanry into their retail spread. This is evident not only in the spatial design strategies or aesthetics but murals inspired by tribal art and motifs providing tangible presence of artisan-led retail.
Interestingly, the international airports showcasing premium and international brands now feature handspun Khadi, hand-painted pottery, regional textiles, and sustainably sourced lifestyle products made by Indian craftspeople on their retail shelves.
