Interview with Dr. Aruna Kalra

You know, right from my student days, I was drawn to women’s health.

Dr. Kalra, you've had an extraordinary journey from being a gold medalist to becoming Gurugram’s first gynecologic robotic surgeon. What inspired you to dedicate your life to women’s health and wellness?

I used to feel that women go through so much physically, emotionally, socially and often put everyone else before themselves. I wanted to change that pattern in some way. Over the years, I’ve realized that women don’t just need treatment, they need care with respect and comfort. That’s what led me to minimally invasive and robotic surgery to make healing gentler and recovery easier for them.

Your new book has already created quite a buzz among readers. What inspired you to write it, and what message did you want to share through it?

The book, “I Want a Boy,” really came from years of conversations with my patients. I've met so many women who've silently carried the pain of gender bias even in educated families. It bothered me deeply. So, I wanted to write something that starts a conversation not to blame anyone, but to open hearts and change mindsets. The core message is that every child is a blessing, and every woman deserves dignity and respect, no matter what.

Writing a book is so different from practicing medicine. How did you manage to balance your professional life with the creative process?
