With his infectious exuberance and sense of mischief, Tristan Farnon has always added an element of fun to 5's period drama All Creatures Great and Small.

But since his return to Skeldale House after serving in Italy during World War Two, the vet, played by Callum Woodhouse, has seemed uncharacteristically subdued. And this week, as the fictional Yorkshire Dales town of Darrowby holds a memorial service to honour the war's fallen soldiers, Tristan is struggling to cope with what he has endured.

'Tristan’s experience of war hasn't been easygoing and it has matured him,' reflects Callum, 31, as he joins TV Times for an exclusive chat. 'Now, it's about how he moves forward.'

But could a spark of happiness be on the horizon as Tristan and brother Siegfried (Samuel West) encounter wealthy new clients General Beauvoir (Jonathan Hyde) and his daughter Charlotte (Gaia Wise; see interview, right), and Charlotte catches Tristan's eye?
