David Tennant and Robert Carlyle star in a gripping real-life drama about the phone-hacking scandal

- By Rebecca Mahoney

A series uniting BAFTA-winning Adolescence writer Jack Thorne with the producers behind Mr Bates vs The Post Office is bound to generate buzz. And with the focus on the UK's infamous phone-hacking scandal, expectations are skyrocketing.

Set between 2002 and 2012, seven-part series The Hack is a riveting, unflinching revisit to a dark decade that rocked British media. The action revolves around allegations that News of the World journalists were intercepting private voicemails of celebrities, royals, footballers and even murder victims – a scandal that triggered the paper's closure in 2011.

Told through two intertwining real-life storylines, the series follows investigative journalist Nick Davies (David Tennant) as he fights to expose the truth, while Met Police detective Dave Cook (Robert Carlyle) works on a seemingly unrelated case - the unsolved 1987 murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.

Toby Jones stars as former Guardian editor and Nick's ally, Alan Rusbridger, while Steve Pemberton plays media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and Eve Myles is Dave Cook's wife, Crimewatch presenter Jacqui Hames. Dougray Scott, Rose Leslie, Katherine Kelly and Adrian Lester also star.
