AS THEY APPROACH 25 YEARS OF MARRIAGE, THE COUPLE LOOK BACK ON HOW THEY FOUND SWEET HARMONY
For someone long accustomed to a jam-packed calendar, Amy Grant has had a lot of downtime these past four years. But then the beloved Christian singer-songwriter has had a lot to recover from: open-heart surgery to correct a birth defect, a brain injury from a bike accident, shoulder surgery and throat surgery to remove a cyst. As her husband, 67-year-old country legend Vince Gill, says, “It was just one thing after another after another.”
In a quiet and vulnerable moment during one of her convalescences, Gill wondered aloud: Would they be okay “if it were ever just us here”? Would they be okay if everything else were taken away? Grant, 64, remembers what Gill said next: “We’d be just fine.” Grant responded, “Yeah, we would. We’d be just fine.”
Thankfully Grant’s health has since been restored, and nothing has been taken away—not their livelihoods and certainly not their ability to be two of the greatest purveyors of Christmas spirit, with their popular holiday recordings (including a new album, When I Think of Christmas) and annual sold-out Nashville concert series.
Poised to celebrate their 25th anniversary in March, the power couple know now more than ever that their lives are built, first and foremost, on the foundation of their love. And knowing that, says Grant, “is a gift.”
