AS THE GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN ON IMMIGRATION, VULNERABLE PEOPLE SAY THEY ARE BEING CAUGHT IN THE SYSTEM AND SPLIT FROM THEIR FAMILIES
On his path back to the White House, Donald Trump vowed to "seal" the southern border and remove millions of migrants in the country illegally-but his approach in office has ignited major debate. Polling shows a majority of the public feels he's trying to deport more people than expected (with some 15,000 removals a month) and focusing more on those who aren't a threat versus "dangerous criminals." Maria Isidro, 52, came from Mexico in 1998 for medical care for one of her four kids. Despite being issued a deportation order in 2004, she stayed in the U.S. on a provisional basis that, under Trump, was revoked. Isidro, who doesn't have a criminal record, was deported in June. Her grown children say they learned a painful lesson. "What we're facing isn't just a broken system," says son Jo, 23. "It's a broken understanding of what it means to be human." Here, four more stories of people facing that system.
