Bandwidth and So Much More
Telecommunications place high demands on network performance but complex applications mean processors, sensors, and system management components are often cutting-edge, as well. Understand which components are critical from edge device to network core to give telecom-enabled systems and applications a solid design boost.
Telecommunications is a single industry that encompasses an exceptionally broad range of products and services. From carrier-grade core switches to “feature phones” (cell phones that would have been at home in 2002), telecommunications products encompass products in which processing speed and data throughput are paramount to those in which size and power consumption are the primary considerations.
Packaging and processing power together are driving a great deal of innovation among processor and network control components as device manufacturers seek to produce ever more powerful edge devices in ever smaller packages. These considerations, along with non-technical issues like international supply chains and the impact of outside events on the health of those brittle chains, have created a market in which new suppliers appear while incumbent suppliers add to their product lines and integration capabilities.
CHANGE DRIVERS
The telecommunications industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by customer demand and advancements in embedded electronics. The demands are consistent: More capabilities at reduced prices. The technical advancements are enhancing network efficiency, improving connectivity, and enabling new applications in mobile and broadband communication.
In addition to the customer-driven evolution already mentioned, there are six significant trends promising to drive innovation and change in telecommunications embedded electronics in the coming months.
