I left drama school in the spring of 1969. I probably learned more in the first month of being a professional actor about what it was to be one than I expected would be necessary after three years of training. I was very lucky, I now realise, to actually get the first job I ever auditioned for. The play was Plaintiff in a Pretty Hat by Hugh and Margaret Williams - the parents of the actor Simon Williams who was later to become, and remains, a great friend.
